Updated:

It's time to play 'Who wants to be the East Region's No. 1 seed?'

Michigan and Villanova were under consideration before stumbling in their respective conference tournaments. That opened the door for Virginia. The Cavaliers used a swarming defense to win the ACC regular season and tournament titles. And now they are out for more.

THE TOP FIVE

1. Upset alert: Harvard ruined several pool sheets last season, stunning No. 3 New Mexico. This year, Cincinnati has to be aware of the Crimson.

2. Familiar faces: Connecticut and Villanova were both in the Big East last season and could meet with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line this year.

3. Melvin Ejim: The Iowa State forward earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors after averaging 18.2 points and 8.6 rebounds.

4. Shabazz Napier: The senior leads Connecticut in points (17.4 per game), rebounding (5.9 per game) and assists (4.9).

5. Maurice Creek: A transfer from Indiana, where he had a series of leg injuries, Creek is averaging 14.3 points for George Washington.

Peaking

Michigan State. The Spartans proved what they could do when everything is clicking, knocking off Wisconsin and Michigan on the way to the Big Ten tournament title.

Reeking

Villanova - Are the Wildcats the team that went 28-3 in the regular season or the team that lost to Seton Hall in the Big East quarterfinals?

Three-pointers

1. Virginia will hold Costal Carolina to 40 points.

2. Cincinnati's Sean Kilpatrick will have a big game against Harvard.

3. The first team to 80 will win the Iowa State-North Carolina game in the round of 32.
