Factory fire could stall Samsung Galaxy S5 production
A FIRE at a factory making parts for the Samsung Galaxy S5 could stall production of the flagship smartphone.
Asian news sources reported that a factory manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs) for the Samsung Galaxy S5 burst into flames at 7pm on Sunday in a blaze that took 287 firefighters and six hours to fight. Apparently no one was injured.
The factory, which is contracted by Samsung to build components for its upcoming flagship smartphone, reportedly suffered $1bn damage from the fire, which could harm production of the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Samsung has yet to respond to our request for comment, so it's still unclear whether or not the Galaxy S5 will be ready for its global launch on 11 April.
This isn't the first we've heard of possible Galaxy S5 delays, however. Earlier this month, we reported that Samsung was encountering problems in producing the fingerprint sensor for the smartphone, which means that it might not have enough ready in time.
According to the reports, Samsung has so far produced more non-working fingerprint scanners than ones that work, and has been forced to draft additional manufacturing capacity from third-party companies to meet expected demand. Samsung has not confirmed those reports, though.
If all still goes to plan, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will arrive on UK shelves on 11 April, and will be available through all UK operators and a number of retailers.
While Samsung has yet to announce pricing for the Galaxy S5, it's already up for pre-order from £500. µ
