Florida Panthers acquire Roberto Luongo — again

Florida Panthers

Things just got real for the Florida Panthers.

Roberto Luongo is coming home.

Luongo has confirmed that the Vancouver Canucks traded him back to the Panthers. Luongo, who continues to reside a few miles north of Florida's training facility in Coral Springs, had been working on coming back to the team for some time.

Under Mike Keenan, the Panthers traded Luongo to the Canucks in a lopsided deal on the eve of the 2006 NHL Draft being held in Vancouver. Florida got Bryan Allen, Todd Bertuzzi and Alex Auld in that deal.

The Panthers reportedly are sending Jacob Markstrom - long considered their goalie of the future - to Vancouver. TSN in Canada also reported that Shawn Matthias will go back to Vancouver in the deal.

It's not known if the Canucks, who traded up-and-coming goalie Cory Schneider to New Jersey in favor of Luongo last summer, will take back some of Luongo's salary.

Luongo has a salary-cap hit of $5.3 million for the next seven-plus seasons. Luongo will make $6.714 million for the following three seasons with his real money sinking in the final four years to $3.82 million (2018-19), $1.62 (2019-20) and $1 million (2020-22). Luongo spent five seasons with the Panthers from 2000 to '06. Florida originally acquired Luongo and former captain Olli Jokinen in a deal with the Islanders at the 2000 NHL Draft.

A two-time Olympic gold medalist for Canada, Luongo dueled new teammate Tim Thomas in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.

Florida will make room on the roster for Luongo by either releasing, trading or sending Scott Clemmensen to the minors. Clemmensen was placed on waivers Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, the Panthers signed winger Brad Boyes to a two-year deal worth more than $5 million and traded defenseman Mike Weaver to Montreal for a fifth-round draft pick in 2015.
