Flyers roar back to beat Capitals in OT

WASHINGTON - Trailing by two goals with a little over eight minutes left in regulation, the Flyers overcame all the odds on Sunday afternoon.

They stunned the Washington Capitals, 5-4, on Vinny Lecavalier's goal with 2 minutes, 15 seconds left in overtime at the Verizon Center.

Lecavalier scored on a left-circle shot that appeared to deflect off another player in front.

The Flyers moved into second place in the Metropolitan Division, pending the New York Rangers' result against Boston on Sunday night.

It was their sixth win in the last seven games, and it gave them 11 victories in which they have trailed in the third period this season, an ongoing franchise record.

With Steve Masson pulled for an extra attacker, Claude Giroux tipped in Jake Voracek's right-circle drive with 1:05 left in regulation to tie the score at 4-4.

The Flyers had gotten to within 4-3 when Voracek scored with 8:02 left during a five-minute power play, awarded because of Dmitry Orlov's boarding major against Brayden Schenn.

Mike Green contributed three assists for the Capitals, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.

Just 54 seconds after Adam Hall converted an Alex Ovechkin turnover into a shorthanded goal to tie the game at 2-2, the Capitals took the lead on Jay Beagle's second goal of the season.

Taking a slick backhanded pass from Joel Ward, Beagle scored from in close with 6:16 left in the second period.

Less than three minutes later, Orlov scored his second goal of the game, beating Steve Mason on a point drive with a maze of players in front of the goalie.

Orlov has three goals this season - all against the Flyers.

In the first two periods, the Flyers gave Washington five power plays. Technically, the Caps didn't score on any of them, but one of their goals was scored just as a penalty expired. The penalties also prevented the Flyers from getting into any type of flow.

The Flyers, who lead the NHL in penalty minutes, were fortunate to face just a 2-1 deficit after a Washington-dominated first period, one in which the visitors won the replay-room war . . . and little else.

The Caps had a 17-6 shots advantage, and Ovechkin fired 10 shots (five on goal) in the opening 20 minutes.

Washington nearly took a 3-1 lead with a little under five minutes left in the first period, but it was ruled that Nicklas Backstrom's shot did not cross the goal line after the puck hit Mason and trickled through him. Defenseman Mark Streit cleared the puck - most of it was over the goal line - and replay officials in Toronto ruled that there was inconclusive evidence that the entire puck was in.

The officials on the ice had ruled that it was not a goal.

Giroux had tied the game at 1-1 by scoring on a power-play blast from the left circle with 8:38 to go in the first period. At first, it was ruled that the puck hit the post and play continued for another 1:31 until there was a stoppage.

But replays confirmed that the puck was in the net, Giroux was credited with his team-high 20th goal, and the time was put back on the clock.

About 21/2 minutes later, Marcus Johansson got position on Nick Grossmann and tapped in Jason Chimera's goalmouth pass to give the Caps a 2-1 lead.
