Instant replay says Mike Trout was out at the plate

TEMPE, Ariz. â?? Major League Baseball's emerging instant replay system got a star-powered test drive Thursday, with a bang-bang play at home plate involving Mike Trout.

The review itself was almost as fast as the action: It took just 1 minute, 12 seconds for umpires to determine that Trout was, indeed out.

Trout, the Los Angeles Angels' two-time American League MVP runner-up was bidding for an inside-the-park home run after his line drive to center field eluded a diving Yasiel Puig.

The ball rolled to the wall and Trout did not hesitate, getting waved home while Puig got the ball to shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who relayed it to catcher A.J. Ellis.

Trout slid home headfirst, as Ellis swiped him high on the leg. Home plate umpire Rob Drake called Trout out, drawing Angels manager Mike Scioscia out to argue.

His filibuster lasted perhaps as long as the actual review. Finally, Scioscia opted to challenge; the replay seemed inconclusive, and the umpire at MLB's central command center in New York sided with Drake.

Before the game, Scioscia â?? now 0 for 2 this spring on challenges â?? mused on working out the system's kinks internally. Clubs do not yet have access to the state-of-the-art TV monitors they'll enjoy during the season.

'You have to practice the logistics, that's for sure. I don't want to make a mockery of it, but if it's a play that makes senseâ?¦I know the umpires are looking for the work as well.

'Right now, we're really handcuffed, because you're limited to certain angles.'

The Angels are one of several teams to already designate their in-house replay guru. Nick Francona, son of Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona, is charged to look at reviews during the game. He's also the Angels' coordinator of major league player information.
