Jaromir Jagr Gets 700th Goal, and Devils Rout the Islanders

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - Jaromir Jagr became the seventh player in N.H.L. history to score 700 goals Saturday as the Devils rolled past the hapless Islanders, 6-1.

Adam Henrique opened the scoring for the Devils at the five-minute mark of the first period with a power-play goal, his 17th, before Jagr made it 2-0 at 3 minutes 31 seconds of the second with his milestone goal, his team-leading 19th.

Jagr, a right wing, skated out in customary style from behind the net to the high slot before sliding the puck past Evgeni Nabokov.

Jagr, a Czech, became the first European-born player to join the 700-goal club and is the third of the seven players who have achieved the mark to do so at Nassau Coliseum.

Wayne Gretzky, the leader with 894 goals, notched his 700th on Jan. 3, 1991, in a 6-3 Los Angeles Kings victory while Marcel Dionne scored his Oct. 31, 1987, as a member of the Rangers.

Ryane Clowe, Marek Zidlicky and Mark Fayne also scored second-period goals for the Devils (26-22-13), who scored four times on the power play and chased Nabokov from the game after the second period.

Eric Gelinas completed the scoring for the Devils (26-22-13) at 19:21 of the third.

Kyle Okposo scored the lone goal for the Islanders, his team-leading 25th, at 6:14 of the second.

Martin Brodeur, starting for the first time since being shelled by the Rangers in a 7-3 outdoor loss at Yankee Stadium on Jan. 26, was back to his stellar self. The 41-year-old Brodeur, mentioned in rumors ahead of Wednesday's trade deadline, made 18 saves for career win 683 while playing in a record 1,249th regular-season game for the Devils.

Both teams were missing their captains. John Tavares of the Islanders sustained a season-ending left knee injury during the Olympics, and Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador was out with a bruised collarbone.

It was Jagr's 61st goal against the Islanders in his 101st game against them.

Jagr also assisted on Zidlicky's power-play goal to make the score 3-1. The assist was his 1,040th and tied Jagr with Dionne for ninth on the career assists list. Dionne had 731 goals.

Jagr is seventh in N.H.L. scoring with 1,740 career points. Steve Yzerman is sixth with 1,755.

Gordie Howe (801), Brett Hull (741), Phil Esposito (717) and Mike Gartner (708) are the other players to surpass 700 goals.

The Islanders (23-31-8) lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

CAPITALS 4, BRUINS 2 Alex Ovechkin collected his 800th career point and raised his N.H.L.-leading total to 43 goals with a pair of power-play scores, leading Washington past host Boston.

Joel Ward and Eric Fehr also scored, and Braden Holtby made 36 saves for the Capitals, who won their fourth straight in their chase for one of the Eastern Conference's final playoff spots.

Ovechkin had the go-ahead goal and two assists in a 5-4 win at Florida on Thursday. It is his first season with more than 40 goals since he collected 40-plus in his first five seasons, from 2005-6 to 2009-10.

Patrice Bergeron and Shawn Thornton had Boston's goals. Tuukka Rask stopped 27 shots in his first start since winning the bronze medal with Finland at the Sochi Olympics. It was just the Bruins' second regulation loss in their past 13 games (8-2-3).

The Capitals opened a 3-0 lead on second-period goals by Ovechkin and Ward. Similar to his first score of the game, Ovechkin one-timed a blistering shot over the right shoulder of Rask, inside the far post from the left circle, for his milestone point.

Ward stole a puck near the blue line from Johnny Boychuk, broke in alone and shifted to his backhand before tucking a shot behind Rask for an unassisted score midway through the period.

The Bruins cut it to 3-1 on Bergeron's power-play goal 41 seconds later when he snapped off a shot from the slot that beat Holtby inside the left post.

Thornton's centering pass was inadvertently tipped past Holtby by Mike Green as he was skating hard to the net battling for position with Bruins forward Gregory Campbell at 17:32. The goal was originally credited to Campbell but was changed. (AP)
