Los Angeles Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters Thursday that Steve Nash will not play again this season.

It's been nearly two years since the Lakers traded for Nash in a sign-and-trade in free agency. That move, combined with the addition of Dwight Howard a month later, was supposed to give Nash the chance to get the ring that eluded him in his prime. Instead, he's barely been on the floor due to injuries.
Since leaving the Suns' vaunted training staff, Nash missed 32 games last season and all but 10 this year due to a variety of injuries including a leg fracture and several complications with his degenerative back condition. He's needed multiple epidurals to deal with the pain.
In a recent video on Grantland.com, Nash said he doesn't know if he'll ever be able to play again.
It's a horrible way for the career of a two-time MVP to end, but a familiar one. Sometimes the body just doesn't give you enough to finish on your own terms.
