Navy football player dies days after collapse

For the second time this year, the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis is mourning one of their own.

A freshman Navy football player who collapsed on the practice field Saturday has died.

The Naval Academy said Midshipman 4th Class Will McKamey, 19, of Knoxville, Tenn., passed away Tuesday after spending three days in Shock Trauma in critical condition.

McKamey underwent emergency surgery at the hospital on Saturday to relieve pressure on his brain, according to Navy officials. Earlier this week, the midshipman's family said in a statement that their son did not suffer 'a bad hit or unusual or extreme contact' during practice before his collapse.

McKamey's family said he was cleared to play football after seeing four neurosurgeons and undergoing several CAT scans and MRIs after a head injury in 2012. McKamey did not play in games for the academy last season.

In a statement, Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miller expressed condolences to McKamey's family, classmates and teammates.

'We are all so very heartbroken by the death of Midshipman Will McKamey,' Miller said. 'This is devastating news for his family, his classmates, his teammates and the entire Naval Academy family.'

McKamey was an oceanography major at the academy and a member of the 3rd Company. He played slot back on the Navy varsity football team.

'As our Navy football family mourns the loss of one of our brothers, we also celebrate and honor his life. He loved his family, his friends and his teammates,' said Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo.

The Naval Academy said funeral arrangements are still pending. Grief counselors are available to midshipmen, faculty and staff through chains of command, chaplains and the Midshipmen Development Center.
