NFL: Denver Broncos upgrade secondary by signing free agents TJ Ward and ...

Aqib Talib: Leaves New England Patriots to sign a big-money deal with Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos have made two early moves in free agency by signing safety TJ Ward and cornerback Aqib Talib.

Despite their run to the Super Bowl last season the Broncos were well within the salary cap and have used the excess funds to make two big signings.

Ward excelled at the Cleveland Browns last year while Talib, who has long been regarded as one of the best defensive backs in the NFL, was a top performer for the New England Patriots.

Ward, 27, has signed a four-year deal while 28-year-old Talib has cashed in on a six-year contract worth a reported total of $57 million, with $26m of that guaranteed.

Under the guidance of Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, the Broncos owned statistically the best offence in NFL history last year.

But they finished 27th in the pass defence rankings and are looking to improve their secondary as they try to go one better than last season's Super Bowl defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.
