'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D:' Coulson Talks 'Captain America 2' Tie

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is all new tonight with a special guest crossover featuring 'Thor's' Lady Sif, A.K.A, Jaimie Alexander. Recently, Agent Coulson, himself, Clark Gregg, recently opened up about the show's ratings and the upcoming Captain America 2 tie-in.

After berating Marvel fans who didn't like the show, Clark Gregg is continuing to defend the series, desperately.

Gregg defended the show to Deadline last month, despite the low overnight numbers. The show tends to improve a little when the DVR and Hulu numbers are added, as Gregg pointed out:

'If you look at how well our show is doing in those numbers, I'm quite encouraged, especially because we aren't Tony Stark and Thor. We're a bunch of new people and Agent Coulson, the supporting player from those [Marvel] films....I mean, are you working for an audience that comes and wants a standalone episode, and at the same time, the fans of Marvel and the geeks like me who TiVo shows, and watch them in a binge?'

It is debatable how many people binge watch shows each week vs recording them and watching them an hour later in order to skip over the commercials, but regardless, S.H.I.E.L.D. has not proven the type event TV that ABC was hoping for.

The lack of viewership is largely due to the show's slow agonizing start, something Clark claims he is proud of, adding:

'I actually am really proud of the way that we've set up this world slowly. Sure, there's some 'finding your way' that had to happen... and I'm happy that we've moved past that phase.'

Now Gregg and the gang are hoping that last week's new episode will help turn the show's ratings around. If tonight's Thor crossover doesn't do it, then the upcoming Captain America movie should definitely renew fans interest, as Clark told TVGuide recently:

'Ask me again [about a S.H.I.E.L.D. movie] after I've seen Captain America 2. From what I can tell from the trailers, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s a big part of that world...this C.E.N.T.I.P.E.D.E. plot and The Clairvoyant is going to kind of pull a lot of things together and perhaps connects to some of the Marvel films in the same way that a [previous episode] connected, to certain extent, with Thor 2. It will be interesting to see how our team integrates with the world after Captain America [ The Winter Soldier].'

Check out the all new episode tonight at 8:00 p.m. and see if things are really getting better.
