Rex Ryan believes former NY Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez 'absolutely' can ...

ORLANDO - Mark Sanchez's five-year run with the Jets may have ended last week, but Rex Ryan believes his former quarter 'absolutely' can be a starter again. A source told the Daily News on Monday that the Eagles have 'the edge' to land Sanchez, who won four road playoff games for Ryan's team.

'I think the best judge of quarterbacks is probably their record,' Ryan said Tuesday at league meetings. 'His win-loss record is not by fluke. The guy has talent. The big thing about Mark (is) when he learns how to protect the football better, that's probably the thing that's missing more than anything else.'

Ryan spoke to Sanchez, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury when he was needlessly inserted into garbage time of a meaningless third preseason game, last week when the team parted ways with their former first-round pick. Sanchez, who was 36-31 in the regular season, had 89 total touchdowns and 72 interceptions with the Jets.

'That's my first draft pick (as) a (head) coach,' Ryan said. 'You have the vision that this guy's going to be with you for 10 years. I'm sure every coach has that. Very few make it that far. In an ideal world, that's what you would have liked.'

Sanchez is throwing at 80 percent capacity, according to a person familiar with the quarterback's shoulder rehab. He's expected to visit a team (likely Philly) the end of this week or early next week.

'I think it's good for him that he moves on,' Ryan said. 'He'll have a chance to start again, I think. He had success here. I'm sure he has some great memories here and some great moments. That's more than a lot of people can say. He took a team to two championship games as a young quarterback. Not everybody can do that. He had some big wins here, a lot of come-from-behind wins... a lot of things like that he can be really proud of. So his experiences I think he should be really proud of. But he's also got a chance to start again somewhere else.'

Sanchez drew the ire of fans by the end of his tenure, but Ryan said that wasn't a factor when the team decided to cut him.

'With some of the fans that booed him... there were several that just cheered him like crazy,' Ryan said. 'I know that didn't have anything to do with our decision... He played a lot of good football. Unfortunately people remember one play. He had some success albeit not what we want - ultimate success.'
