With the Ohio State Buckeyes in the NCAA Tournament, most folks here in Columbus already know.As your building your brackets and cheering for your top picks, take a look at these 'Did you know?' March Madness facts. They might surprise you:- Almost 3 in 10 (27%) respondents watch March Madness games at work. -- Of those brave souls, nearly 4 in 10 (39%) will be streaming online right from their computers! -- Is it possible that phone carriers might see an uptick in data usage in March? Possibly, since 41% of respondents said they'd like to stream from their smartphone at work, and 38% said they'd use their tablet.- Parental viewers: It might have something to do with not having time at home, but over 4 in 10 (42%) working parents surveyed will be watching at the office compared to just 17% of those without children. - Southern fans: Close to 1 in 3 (32%) surveyed who live in the South will be viewing at work compared to just 20% in the Midwest. - Bar-goers: 2 in 10 (20%) men surveyed would go to a bar at lunch during the workday to watch the games. - Feel a cold coming on? Over 1 in 10 (11%) surveyed would call in sick to work to watch March Madness games. And of those, 19% are parents versus only 5% who are not.- Among those who choose a favorite team during March Madness, more than 4 in 10 (41%) would watch every game their favorite team plays if they were to make it to the NCAA Sweet 16.Also, for those of you having fun with March Madness at work:- Employers should be cautious against tossing a new computer-use policy at workers as the NCAA tourney begins. Rather, this is a good time for business owners and managers to review their policies on computer use and workplace productivity in general. Then remind workers of those policies and expectations.- Employers should strike a balance between employee morale and productivity. For example, a company could set up a television in the cafeteria during lunch hour with the price of admission being a small donation to a charity. But afterwards it's time to get back to work.- Some companies block in-house computer access to sites that stream March Madness games. But just about every employer must deal with the growing number of workers who watch on their personal smartphones and computer tablets. It's no different than someone going out for a smoke break and taking an hour. Either way can certainly regulate their productivity and attention to work.
