Major Retailers To Publish Unit Prices Online
At least six major retailers in U.S. agree on Tuesday to make their unit prices available online over the next nine months.
Wal-Mart, Costco, FreshDirect, Walgreens, CVS, and Drugstore.com reached an agreement to add unit prices to their websites' product pages and mobile apps in the next months so shoppers will have an easier time to shop.
However, the world's largest online retailer, Amazon, is not joining the pack. This Amazon's decision makes market analysts wonder.
Vice president at retail analysts Forrester Research Sucharita Mulpuru-Kodali said since Amazon often has the lowest unit prices, comparisons with other retailers would benefit them.
The unit prices are usually seen at many of the retailers' physical locations, but often online. This helps consumers in determining how much a product costs by each unit of weight. It divides the full price of the item by the size of its packaging.
Since there are same product that can be purchase in several different sizes, a unit price is a better way to measure up whether a big bottle of a product is really a good deal compared to a smaller one.
The companies also agreed to add unit pricing for any online stores they may open in the future.
