As expected, the New York Jets cut the fading star Monday, creating an $8.25 million saving on their $133 million salary cap for this season.

'I appreciate Tone's contributions over the last four seasons,' coach Rex Ryan said in a statement released on the team's website. 'I've always admired his knack for making the clutch play. He's a tremendous competitor who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line.

DEPARTING JET: Antonio Cromartie released

'I wish him nothing but the best.'

The Super Bowl XLIII MVP was acquired from the Pittsburgh Steelers four years ago for a fifth-round pick. Holmes was limited to just four games in 2012 by a foot injury that lingered into last season when the 30-year-old receiver had just 23 receptions for 456 yards with one touchdown.

The Jets cut ties with cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Sunday and are still expected to ultimately part with quarterback Mark Sanchez.
