NY Jets agree to terms with WR Eric Decker on 5

Former Broncos WR Eric Decker signs a mammoth free agent deal with the Jets Wednesday.

The Jets may have started off free agency slowly, but made a big splash late Wednesday night, landing former Broncos receiver Eric Decker. A source confirmed the contract details - 5-years, $36.25 million with $15 million in guaranteed money - to land arguably the top wideout on the market and address Gang Green's biggest need.

Decker had visited the Jets facility all day and had gone out to dinner with members of the Jets, including Rex Ryan, before the deal was announced.

Decker's true value is up for debate because of the quarterback he has played with the last two seasons: Peyton Manning. He put up gaudy numbers (87 receptions, 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns) with Denver last season, but if he moved to the Jets, he'd be jumping from a future Hall-of-Fame QB to Geno Smith, a second-year player coming off a trying rookie season.

Decker was still productive - 44 catches for 612 yards and eight touchdowns - in 2011 when Tim Tebow was the quarterback for the majority of Denver's season.

But on the biggest stage, Decker was a huge disappointment. The entire Broncos squad struggled in its Super Bowl beatdown at the hands of the Seahawks last month, but Decker's one reception for six yards at MetLife Stadium was a dismal showing.

Wide receiver was the Jets' most critical need after the team had a receiving group last season that may have been the worst in the league.

Decker isn't going to fix that issue on his own, but it's a start.

The Jets' top receiver is Jeremy Kerley, who works best in the slot. He's joined by Stephen Hill, who has been a bust his first two seasons, and David Nelson, a useful backup. It would make sense for the Jets to add multiple receivers this offseason either through free agency or the early rounds of the draft in May. This year's wide receiver draft class is particularly rich with talent.
