Oppo's Find 7's 5.5

BEIJING, China -- If you haven't heard of Oppo before, perhaps it is time to sit up and pay attention. We previously reviewed the very impressive Oppo N1, the company's flagship Android handset with a 13-megapixel swivel camera and a 5.9-inch display. The Chinese company's latest LTE-enabled Find 7 comes with its own gimmick as well -- a 5.5-inch Quad HD display with a 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution. That's four times as many pixels as you would find on a 720p TV, in case you're wondering.

During my time with the Find 7, I was pretty impressed with how sharp the screen looked -- I squinted really close, and couldn't even make out the individual pixels -- though not that you can with some full-HD smartphones like the 4.7-inch HTC One, for example. It's likely you will be able to do so on larger displays though, but there's no reason for your eyes to be that close to your handset anyway!

The good thing about having a Quad HD display though, is that you won't need to worry about discerning individual pixels even on larger handsets. It's also a nice number to throw about for marketing purposes, of course.

The Quad HD screen comes from JDI (not LG, which announced that it was making one available for manufacturers as of last year). There appears to be some color issues for now (a greenish tint), but the company is adjusting the firmware to calibrate the screen.

Build-wise, the handset is made with an magnesium-aluminium alloy chassis, and comes with a carbon fibre rear. While the smartphone's 171g weight makes it pretty light, the Find 7's corners have a little bit of an edge that digs into your palm when you're holding it.

The smartphone is powered by Oppo's custom ColorOS and is similar to what you'll find on the N1. The UI is clean and cheerful, and comes with a custom features such as gesture controls.

The 13-megapixel camera was snappy and also comes with enhancements such as Super Zoom, which lets you take a 50-megapixel picture. What happens is that the phone takes multiple shots and combines four for the big picture, so to speak. There's also gif capture, as well as 4K recording. Other features include fast charging -- the phone is able to juice up the 3,000mAh battery from 0 to 75 percent in 30 minutes.

A 1080p variant called the Find 7a will be launched alongside the Find 7, but this version will have a slightly slower 2.3GHz quad-core processor, a smaller 2,800mAh battery and less onboard storage (16GB).

The Find 7 and Find 7a will be available globally in mid-April with a retail pricing of $599 and $499 respectively. The Find 7 will also be available in China tomorrow.
