DVR alert: Emmys, 'Dexter' finale and 'Breaking Bad' all air Sunday
This Sunday will be a tricky night for 'Breaking Bad' fans, and fans of quality cable drama in general. If you live on the West Coast, however, it may not be much of a problem, depending on your TV provider.
Of course, the penultimate episode of 'Breaking Bad,' titled 'Granite State,' will be airing Sunday, with an additional 15 minutes for a grand total of 75 minutes with commercials. But those wanting to watch it live may find themselves in a bit of a quandary. The Emmy Awards are airing at the same time.
If it were any other award show, like the Oscars, viewers could safely tune it out or watch the highlights later. But this is the Primetime Emmy Awards and 'Breaking Bad' is currently favored to take home several of the major drama awards, including outstanding drama series.
So, on the one hand, there's the chance to see what happened after the implosion of Walter White's personal life on 'Breaking Bad,' and on the other hand there's the chance to see Bryan Cranston get lauded for playing Walter White.
But wait! There's a twist. Airing at the same time as 'Breaking Bad' is the series finale of 'Dexter.' The Michael C. Hall serial killer drama that's aired for eight seasons on Showtime will come to its final, bloody conclusion.
Both shows air at 9 p.m. And the Emmys air at 8 p.m. However, on the West Coast, the Emmys are airing live at 5 p.m. and rerunning again at 8 p.m. That makes things slightly less complicated only if you have regular cable, and are forced to wait until 9 p.m. to see 'Dexter' or 'Breaking Bad,' anyway. DirecTV and Dish Network customers will have the option to watch 'Dexter' or 'Breaking Bad' at 6 p.m. instead of 9 p.m., but that's still running against the Emmys.
And yes, we live in an on-demand world now and both dramas rerun later in the evening. But which show deserves to be watched live and which one is worth watching later and risking those dreaded spoilers?
While 'Dexter' never won as many Emmys as 'Breaking Bad,' it was still a critical and audience favorite. And though it isn't nominated for any Emmys this year, it could always make a comeback next year for its final season.
And then, of course, there's all the football. So much football.
