Comedian David Brenner, a late-night TV fixture who holds the record for the most 'Tonight Show' guest appearances, died Saturday. He was 78.


Brenner died in New York City, a family rep told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He was considered the father of observational comedy, a form of humor that relied on impromptu quips rather than canned jokes.

Born and raised in a hardscrabble section of Philadelphia, Brenner shot to fame in 1971 after he became a late-night TV favorite.



He's said to hold the record for appearances - 158 - on 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.'

'Brenner was a star,' comic Richard Lewis tweeted. 'The king of 'hip, observational comedy.' Mentored me. He was family. This leaves an irreplaceable hole.'


Brenner is survived by his third wife, former champion pairs skater Tai Babilonia, 54.
