Google Hangouts for iOS Devices Gets a Complete Makeover

Google Hangouts, Google's cross-platform messenger app, got a total revamp recently, The Verge reports.

Google Hangouts 2.0's new design was announced Friday morning by Google Engineer Frank Petterson on his Google Plus page.

Google Hangouts 2.0 is set with a flat new look that blends with the iOS 7, a more user-friendly interface that allows for easier navigation, plus a lot more other improvements.

Free voice calls and video calls are still a feature, as is the ability to snap a photo and send it to your friend.

As for the new additions for the features, Hangouts 2.0 brings a new sticker function that works like emoticons, except their animated pictures users can stick to their messages to further express themselves. According to Petterson, users can 'think of them as emoji, but even more awesome.'

In addition to video calling and perhaps tying together the old practice of voice mail and video calls, users can now create video messages with the hangouts. They can record and send short videos to people they are in conversation with.

Location sharing is another new feature, it allows users to share a map of their current location and send it to others with just 'a few simple taps' which makes coordination a lot of people easier.

The Google Hangouts 2.0 user interface has also been optimized for the iPad, which allows for the app to present a larger screen for video calls.

With these improvements, it is interesting to note that Google has done so much in improving their systems on the iOS, but they seem to have neglected the mobile operating system that the company actually owns; the Android.

However, while Google might be moving in the wrong direction for the Andriod, they seem to be stepping further in the right for messaging in general.

Streamlining their messenger app that stretches across platforms might just be Google's attempt at responding to Facebook slowly digging its claws deeper into the communication pipeline of the world, The Verge reports.

Hopefully, the new iOS release is just the beginning of Google's work into interconnectivity.
