Olsen and her fiance have been a frequent presence at basketball games in New York City, where they share a US$6.25 million ($7 million) townhouse.
Olsen's first marriage will also see her become a stepmother to Sarkozy's children with his first wife Charlotte Bernard - Julien, 12, and Margo, 10.
'Mary-Kate has made him a better father. She remembers all the kids' special events,' a source told Us. 'She thinks he's a great dad.'
Another source said the Olsen family are happy with the match. 'Mary-Kate's family thinks Olivier is the best thing to happen to her. They love him.'
Mary-Kate's twin sister, Ashley, is also dating an older man, Moneyball director Bennet Miller, who is 47.
Of the attention paid to her age difference with Sarkozy, Mary-Kate told the Wall Street Journal: 'I find it's better to focus on what's in front of you and to keep putting one foot in front of the other.'
The twins became stars on the hit TV show Full House at only 9 months old and successfully transitioned to the world of fashion design, after a stellar run at licensing their names to a range of pre-teen products.
