Tomato Basil Pantry Pasta


 Tomato basil pantry pasta is the kind of recipe that saves a busy evening. It uses canned tomatoes, dried pasta, garlic, and a handful of basil to create a clean, familiar dinner with very little effort.

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces pasta
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Grated Parmesan or pecorino, optional

Method

  1. Cook pasta in salted water until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water.
  2. Warm olive oil in a skillet. Add garlic and cook until fragrant.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
  4. Simmer for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Toss pasta with the sauce, adding reserved pasta water as needed.
  6. Finish with torn basil and grated cheese.

Kitchen Notes

For a richer sauce, stir in a tablespoon of butter at the end. For extra protein, add white beans or grilled chicken.
