Benedict Cumberbatch Admits He Almost Considered Turning Down The Role ...
Confessing to having some 'reservations' to EW, the actor who recently made a comeback to our TV screens for the third series, said:
'My reservation was 'Well, this is a very iconic character, there will be a lot of attention on it'.
'This was before I had had any significant success [but] I knew there would still be a lot of focus on it. And while I had done work, it wasn't stepping into the populist limelight like playing a character like Holmes. So I did have a pause for thought.'
We're glad he didn't!
Benedict almost gave up the role of Sherlock (BBC Pictures)
Explaining his reasons for saying yes and teaming up with Martin Freeman, who plays the role of Dr John Watson, Benedict continued:
'I thought, 'If I'm going to do this, if I'm going to step into the limelight with a large leading role of iconic status, then I might as well do it these people'.
'They know what they're doing and I completely trust them. I felt like I was being asked to join the family and have some fun. There was nothing businessy about it. And that's how to operate it.'
Meanwhile, co-creator and writer Steven Moffathas revealed that the plan to bring back Moriarty in the very last scene of the last episode of series three, wasn't a last minute decision.
With the first episode of the series giving viewers multiple explanations over how Sherlock - played by Benedict Cumberbatch - faked his own death, the series went on to deliver more shocks and twists, including the revelation that John Watson's new wife Mary is an assassin.
Speaking about the decision to bring Moriarty back, Moffat told Empire: 'We've had certain aspects of what we're going to do mapped out for quite a while. We can't say much more than that, but it is not a last-minute whim.'
