Clay Aiken Mulling Bid For Congress
Will Clay Aiken be adding 'congressman' to his resume?
The American Idol runner-up is said to be 'actively considering' a bid for Congress in North Carolina's 2nd District, according to a report in The Washington Blade. The seat is currently held by GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers, who first won the seat long held by a Democrat in 2010.
Aiken reportedly has been making calls to gauge support in the district, including to a Democratic political consultant and pollsters. The Washington Blade report cites unnamed sources.
Ellmers, currently chairwoman of the Republican Women's Policy Committee, narrowly defeated Democrat Bob Etheridge in 2010. She passed on running for the U.S. Senate this year. Ellmers could be facing a challenge on her right for standing with the House GOP leadership, according to the News & Observer in Raleigh.
Aiken has been recording and appeared on Broadway since his American Idol stint in 2003. He's also been an outspoken advocate on gay and lesbian issues.
