DaVaris Daniels to be suspended

By Matt Fortuna | ESPN.com

Notre Dame wide receiver DaVaris Daniels will be suspended for the spring semester because of an academic issue, Daniels told ESPN.com in a statement.

'I understand that attending the University of Notre Dame is a privilege and with that comes a certain level of academic responsibility,' Daniels said. 'Therefore, I will not be attending Notre Dame in the Spring semester but fully expect to re-enroll in the Summer semester to earn my degree and continue playing football for the Irish!'

Daniels' father, Phillip Daniels, played in the NFL for 15 years as a defensive end for the Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks.

Daniels is the Fighting Irish's leading returning receiver for 2014, as the redshirt sophomore hauled in 49 catches for 745 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013, each number ranking second on the team behind graduating senior TJ Jones.

Daniels for his career has caught 80 passes for 1,235 yards and seven touchdowns the last two seasons.

The 6-foot-1, 203-pounder was ESPN's No. 65 overall player when coming out of Vernon Hills (Ill.) High in the class of 2011, and he was the No. 12 receiver in the country.

NBCSports.com had earlier reported that Daniels could be facing a suspension, citing sources.
