Microsoft renames Skydrive as Onedrive following Bskyb spat
SOFTWARE HOUSE Microsoft has renamed its Skydrive cloud storage service as Onedrive following a legal dustup with Bskyb.
Microsoft announced the news in a blog post on its newly launched Onedrive.com domain, where a holding webpage promises that it will soon launch the renamed cloud storage service, which now ties in with its Xbox One branding.
This move to rename Skydrive comes six months after Microsoft lost a legal battle with Bskyb. The UK broadcasting giant claimed that it had widely used the Sky trademark before Microsoft's service began in the UK, and a judge ruled in Bskyb's favour.
Ryan Gavin, general manager of apps and services at Microsoft said, 'Why Onedrive? We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want Onedrive for everything in your life.
'Of course, changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn't easy. We believe the new Onedrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future. We are excited about what is to come, and can't wait to share more.'
Gavin also offered a bit of advice for those already using Skydrive, saying that all content will be available once the name change is complete.
'For current users of either Skydrive or Skydrive Pro, you're all set. The service will continue to operate as you expect and all of your content will be available on Onedrive and Onedrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio,' he said.
