NASCAR: Memo Gidley required surgery after a horror smash at Daytona

Memo Gidley's wreck is taken away from Daytona

Memo Gidley needed surgery on his left arm and leg after a terrifying crash in the early stages of the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Gidley and fellow driver Matteo Malucelli remained in hospital for further evaluation and testing following their smash near the three-hour mark of the prestigious endurance race.

The Gainsco/Bob Stallings Racing driver had to be cut out of his Corvette after it plowed into the back of Malucelli's Ferrari.

The race was red-flagged for the first time in 10 years as emergency workers tended to both drivers.

'This stuff, it happens, it's racing. But you never expect it to be your car, your team,' said Darren Law, Gidley's team-mate.

The race finally got underway again after a 90-minute interval.
