No. 4 Michigan St. Struggles but Wins Ninth Straight
Gary Harris scored 14 points, and No. 4 Michigan State beat Northwestern, 54-40, on Wednesday night for its ninth straight win.
The preseason favorite to win the Big Ten, the Spartans (16-1, 5-0) continue to roll along, although it was hardly an easy night for them. They overcame a sluggish start on the road and pulled away down the stretch even though they struggled mightily from the outside.
They were 2 of 16 on 3-pointers, with Harris missing all six of his tries and Keith Appling going 0 for 3. Harris did have four steals, and Appling scored 11 points.
Branden Dawson, fighting an illness, had 11 rebounds and 3 blocks for the Spartans, who were missing one of their top players in Adreian Payne.
UMASS 88, GEORGE MASON 87 Chaz Williams had 26 points and 8 assists, Derrick Gordon made a go-ahead layup with eight seconds remaining, and No. 16 Massachusetts beat George Mason.
The visiting Minutemen (15-1, 3-0 Atlantic 10) rallied from 8 points down in the second half to win their sixth straight.
Sherrod Wright scored 26 points to lead the Patriots (7-10, 0-3), who lost for the eighth time in 10 games. George Mason was seeking its first win over a ranked opponent in more than six years.
OKLAHOMA ST. 82, T.C.U. 50 Marcus Smart scored 20 points to help No. 9 Oklahoma State defeat T.C.U. at home. Smart also had eight rebounds and five assists for the Cowboys (15-2, 3-1 Big 12).
Oklahoma State needed to win to stay within range of Big 12 leader Kansas. The 15th-ranked Jayhawks (4-0 Big 12) host the Cowboys on Saturday.
ST. LOUIS 66, ST. BONAVENTURE 60 Dwayne Evans scored 18 points, and No. 24 St. Louis won its first game since breaking into the top 25 for the first time, holding off St. Bonaventure at home.
Jordair Jett scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half for St. Louis (16-2, 3-0 Atlantic 10), which has won 10 in a row. The start is the university's best since the 1993-94 team was 19-1.
RUTGERS 85, CENT. FLORIDA 75 Myles Mack scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half as Rutgers held off visiting Central Florida.
Jerome Seagears had 18 points for the Scarlet Knights (8-9, 2-2) in the first meeting between the American Athletic Conference teams. Mack, who scored his 1,000th career point on a first-half free throw, had six of his eight assists in the second half.
Isaiah Sykes had a career-high 29 points along with eight rebounds for the Knights (9-6, 1-3).
HOFSTRA 69, N.C.-WILM. 64 Zeke Upshaw scored 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, to lift Hofstra to a win at North Carolina-Wilmington.
The Pride (6-11, 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association) held on to a narrow lead throughout the second half and needed a 5-0 spurt that included an Upshaw 3-pointer with about five minutes left to hold off the Seahawks.
Women
LOUISVILLE 75, CENT. FLORIDA 56 Shoni Schimmel had 27 points, and Sara Hammond added 22 as No. 5 Louisville beat Central Florida for its 10th straight victory.
Bria Smith added 10 points as the host Cardinals (17-1, 5-0 American Athletic Conference) matched their best 18-game start since the 2009 season. Louisville overcame a slow start to build a 23-point lead early in the second half, a cushion that came in handy after the determined Knights (8-8, 1-4) rallied to 66-55 with two and a half minutes remaining.
MICHIGAN 65, PURDUE 49 Madison Ristovski scored 17 points, and Michigan never trailed, knocking off No. 22 Purdue on the road. Ristovski was 5 of 9 from the field for the Wolverines (12-5, 3-1 Big Ten), connecting on 3 of 5 from long-range.
