Iowa State has hired former Kansas coach Mark Mangino as offensive coordinator, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad.

Mangino led Kansas for eight seasons from 2002-2009 but then spent three seasons out of football after resigning amid an investigation into allegations of player mistreatment.

He spent last season as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach at Youngstown State, his alma mater.

Mangino led the Jayhawks to back-to-back bowl bids for the first time in school history and won the Orange Bowl following a 2007 season in which Kansas went 12-1 and Mangino was named national coach of the year.

Mangino replaces Courtney Messingham, who was fired after Iowa State finished in the bottom three of the Big 12 in points per game (24.8), yards per game (363), yards per play (4.82), rushing yards (143.83) and passing yards (219.17).
