Idina Menzel of 'Frozen' to sing at Oscars, open a Broadway show
The coming week looks like it will be an extremely busy one for actress Idina Menzel.
The 'Wicked' and 'Rent' veteran is scheduled to sing 'Let It Go' from the Disney animated movie 'Frozen' on Sunday at the Oscar ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. On Wednesday, the actress will be back in New York to begin performances of the musical 'If/Then,' which will mark her return to Broadway since leaving the role of Elphaba in 'Wicked.'
Menzel has had her biggest movie role to date in 'Frozen,' providing the voice of the headstrong Elsa. The song 'Let It Go,' written by 'The Book of Mormon's' Robert Lopez and his wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, is nominated for an Oscar in the category of original song.
'Let It Go' has been a runaway hit. On YouTube, the song has racked up more that 115 million views. Singers performing the other nominated songs on Sunday's telecast will include pop stars Karen O, who will perform 'The Moon Song' from the Spike Jonze movie 'Her'; Pharrell Williams, performing 'Happy,' from the animated feature 'Despicable Me 2'; and the group U2, performing 'Ordinary Love,' from the movie 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.'
On Broadway, Menzel will reprise her role in 'If/Then' that she played last year in Washington at the National Theater. The musical is by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, who won the Pulitzer Prize for drama for the musical ' Next to Normal.'
Menzel will play a woman in her 30s who has moved to New York, where she faces an array of life options. The cast includes Menzel's 'Rent' costar Anthony Rapp.
'If/Then' is scheduled to officially open March 30 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York.
