SURPRISE, Ariz. - Jurickson Profar, whose talent prompted the Texas Rangers to trade All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler, will miss up to three months after tearing a muscle in his right shoulder, the team announced Sunday.
Profar, who turned 21 last month, has been among the game's top prospects the past four years, but was blocked at the major league level by shortstop Elvis Andrus and Kinsler. The Rangers dealt Kinsler to the Detroit Tigers in November, receiving slugging first baseman Prince Fielder in return, but suddenly have a significant hole in the middle of their infield.
Profar's injury continues a difficult off-season for the Rangers, who are warily monitoring a back injury suffered by ace Yu Darvish. No. 2 starter Derek Holland is already out until around midseason after a freak knee injury suffered in January.
