Bill Belichick said Sunday that he needed to look at the film on the collision between Wes Welker and Aqib Talib that knocked the Patriots cornerback out of the Patriots 26-16 loss to the Broncos in AFC Championship Game. By Monday morning, Belichick had looked at the film and he wasn't happy.
'It was a deliberate play by the receiver to take out Aqib,' Belichick told reporters. 'No attempt to get open. I'll let the league handle the discipline on that, it's not for me to decide. It was one of the worst plays I've seen.'
The Broncos were able to take advantage of the depleted Patriots secondary after Talib left early in the second quarter, and Demaryius Thomas totaled seven receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots were hoping for a penalty on Welker on the play, but a flag was never thrown.
'It was a key play in the game,' Belichick said Sunday. 'I'll say he's a key player for us.'
Welker claimed after the game that he wasn't intentionally trying to take Talib out.
'Yeah it was one of those plays where it's kind of a rough play and I was trying to get him to go over the top, and I think he was thinking the same thing and wanted to come underneath and we just kind of collided,' Welker said. 'It wasn't a deal where I was trying to hit him or anything like that, I hope he's OK, he's a great player and a big part of their defense.'
Though Welker said he was trying to avoid Talib, Thomas did admit after the game 'It was kind of like a pick play.'
Alfonzo Dennard took over Talib's responsibilities of covering Thomas and struggled. Thomas' success was just part of the Broncos' 400-yard passing attack in the winning effort.
