Daily Jolt, January 9: Could Lane Kiffin be Alabama's next OC?
It didn't take long after Michigan announced the departure of Al Borges that news leaked of its next step. Alabama will take a little longer to replace Doug Nussmeier, who reportedly accepted the Wolverine job Wednesday night. A number of names entered the discussion to be Nick Saban's fourth offensive coordinator at Alabama. Phil Savage, the analyst on Alabama's radio broadcasts and executive director of the Senior Bowl, mentioned two names on his Twitter account. Crimson Tide receivers coach Billy Napier and former UCLA/Washington/Colorado head coach Rick Neuheisel made the list 'to keep an eye on.' ... Then there's Lane Kiffin. The former USC/Tennessee/Oakland Raiders coach's name was popular on the social mediums Wednesday night given his recent trip to Tuscaloosa. (AL.com) Comment
As it turns out, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels won't be the next head coach in Cleveland. [McDaniels] took himself out of the running for the Browns job when he was told he wasn't the frontrunner, a league source told cleveland.com. McDaniels asked the Browns if he was No. 1 on their list, and was told no, the source said. It's not uncommon for coaches to take themselves out of contention when they're not sure they're going to get the job. The Browns told McDaniels, 37, that they were conducting an exhaustive search and that they planned to continue to the process. It's one that could ultimately include former head coaches, current college coaches and more NFL assistants. The pursuit of Masahiro Tanaka has advanced to a new phase. [Japanese news media outlets] reported that Tanaka had arrived in the United States on Wednesday to begin meeting with teams interested in signing him. It is not known how many teams he will visit, but there is a deadline. Tanaka, 25, a highly regarded right-handed pitcher, was posted by the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles last month and has until Jan. 24 to complete a deal with a major league team. ... Several major league teams have expressed interest. The Yankees, who expect the bidding to exceed $100 million, plan to be aggressive. If Tanaka visits multiple teams, a stop at Yankee Stadium is likely to be on his agenda. Tanaka is represented by Casey Close, Derek Jeter's longtime agent. (The New York Times) Comment
