Dolphins fire offensive coordinator Mike Sherman
The Miami Dolphins' flop in their final two games was going to cost someone a job. It ended up being offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.
Coach Joe Philbin announced through the team on Monday that Sherman has been relieved of his duties.
Sherman, 59, had been with the Dolphins for two seasons after being fired at Texas A&M, where he coached Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
The Dolphins ranked 27th in offense both years and scored just seven points total in their final two games, both losses to the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets that kept them out of the playoffs.
Tannehill told USA TODAY Sports last month that Sherman's offense was '80 to 90%' progression-read - echoing a common complaint of detractors that the Dolphins were running a system offense in a league obsessed with exploiting matchups.
It was a delicate decision for Philbin, who got his first NFL job as assistant offensive line coach on Sherman's staff with the Green Bay Packers in 2003.
'I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins,' Philbin said in a statement issued by the team.
'Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future.'
All indications are Philbin's job is safe.
