Romney finds new 'MITT' documentary 'painful to watch'
A new Netflix documentary follows Mitt Romney from 2006 through the final results of the 2012 presidential election.
The new documentary 'MITT,' which profiles Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, during his run for the 2012 presidential race, premiered Jan. 17 at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, according to The Washington Post.
'MITT' provides a behind-the-scenes look at Romney and his interactions with potential voters, debate preparations, moments with his family and final results of the election. The film is the work of Greg Whitley, who began filming Romney in 2006.
Whitley's objective with the film was to capture Romney, the person - not Romney, the politician.
'Audiences really get to see a certain vulnerability and weakness to Mitt. You look at someone like him who is wealthy, but being a part of human life you see his worries in those small moments,' Whiteley said in an interview with FOX411. 'The film is apolitical. We take great pains to avoid trying to tell you that you should or should not like Mitt Romney or that you should vote for him. My job was to shut up and film.'
According to Fox411, Romeny's staff was originally against the idea, but once the project was approved, Whitley was given unfettered access to Romney and his family.
In one scene in particular, Romney shows apprehension in debating President Obama. His wife, Ann, encourages him, 'You should not be intimated by him, I am not kidding, Mitt.'
'Over six years of filming you develop a great deal of empathy for your subject. And on the other hand, I was pinching myself that I was there in that room experiencing that moment,' explained the director. 'I was impressed by his stamina through all the rigors of the campaign.'
Romney made an appearance at the film's premiere Friday in Salt Lake City. Through a smile, Romney commented that the documentary was not 'the film he would have made.'
'He said it was painful to watch, but he was touched by seeing his family and how much they really supported him,' Whitley told Fox411.
The Netflix original documentary begins streaming on the digital service Jan. 24.
