Autodesk, a popular software maker that caters to different industries such as , has revealed its plan to come up with its own 3-D printer and companion software in an attempt to further hasten the up-and-coming industry of 3-D printing.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Carl Bass, chief executive of the California-based multinational company, announced the firm's decision Wednesday, May 14, at an event in Silicon Valley for the do-it-yourself set called 'makers.'
'This will be our first foray into hardware,' Bass said in an interview with WSJ. 'We are trying to usher in a new age where there is more experimentation.'
WSJ reported that there are already some people who are using Autodesk software to experiment designs of various kinds of real-world objects that are brought to life using 3-D printers, which turn these designs to actual physical objects through layering melted plastic or other suitable materials.
Bass, however, pointed out that several 3-D printer makers sell their own proprietary computer software, which can cause some issues for users. In addition, there are some cases in which users could secure 3-D printing materials like plastic solely from the hardware manufacturer.
In order to solve these problems, Autodesk aims to make a desktop printer that is compatible with materials from a variety of suppliers. Moreover, the company plans to release the full design of their 3-D printer, allowing anyone to come up with a compatible clone device.
This only shows that Autodesk is not after the money, Instead, it is trying to help other companies that will rival each other on extra specs and pricing.
Autodesk's upcoming 3-D printer is not targeting the home market. Rather, its printer is aimed at more professional users, and is more likely to go sale with a price tag of around $5,000 (not the exact price).
Aside from the 3-D printing hardware, Autodesk will also release an accompanying software called Spark. According to Bass, Spark is an open software platform that provides a more reliable and simpler way of printing simulated 3-D objects.
Bass said Autodesk's printer and Spark will be released to the market later this year.
