Chris Young error in 14th costs Mets as Reid Brignac drives in game

PHILADELPHIA -- When he left the Mets, in an August trade, Marlon Byrd told the team he would love to talk about a return when he was a free agent in the winter. Instead, the Mets signed Chris Young and Byrd got a two-year deal with the Phillies.

Friday night, it could not be more clear how the Phillies got the better deal. Not only is Byrd living up to expectations for the Phillies and Young is struggling at the plate, but Friday night, Byrd took advantage of Young's error to score the winning run in the Phillies 6-5 14-inning win at Citizens Bank Park.

Young misread Marlon Byrd's high fly ball, running too far back and then getting under it but dropping it, putting Byrd on second. Carlos Ruiz slapped a single up the middle to move Byrd to third with no outs and he scored on Reid Brignac's fly ball to left.

The Phillies (24-28) snapped the Mets (25-29) winning streak at three straight games. It was the first time in seven games at Citizens Bank Park the Mets had lost.

The Mets continued their epic struggles in situational hitting Friday night. With the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, Bobby Abreu struck out on three pitches, making them hitless in their last 13 bases-loaded situations and 6-for-48 this season. They had runners on first and second in the tenth when Chris Young and Juan Lagares struck out, making them 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position on the night.

While the bullpen gave the Mets eight scoreless innings, the pitching did not get off to a solid start.

In his first major-league start outside of Citi Field, Rafael Montero went just 3 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. He walked two and did not strike out a batter.

After four major league starts, Montero is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA.

The Mets gave Montero a 3-0 lead to work in the second. After Burnett issued back-to-back walks to start the inning, Lucas Duda drove in a run with a double. Travis d'Arnaud's ground out to second scored another and Ruben Tejada's single left gave the Mets a 3-0 lead.

The Phillies cut the lead by a run in the third, when Burnett singled and scored on Chase Utley's ground out. Montero gave up the lead in the fourth, giving up a three-run homer to struggling Phillies outfielder Domonic Brown homered to score three runs and give the Phillies the 4-3 lead.

Montero would not get out of the inning. He gave up a single to Reid Brignac and then Burnett reached on a fielder's choice, when d'Arnaud missed the throw on a force-out attempt at second. Montero coaxed a ground-ball double play ball out of Ben Revere, but then walked Jimmy Rollins.

Daisuke Matsuzaka came in to get the final out of the inning, but gave up the tying run in the fifth. He walked Byrd and gave up a double to Carlos Ruiz to lead off the fifth. Byrd scored on Brown's ground out to shortstop.
