Diamondbacks hire Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa as Chief Baseball ...
Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa will join the Arizona Diamondbacks as Chief Baseball Officer, the team announced in a press release Saturday afternoon.
La Russa will oversee all baseball operations and report directly to team president/CEO Derrick Hall. He'll be formally introduced at a press conference at Chase Field this afternoon. It's a blast of good news in what's been a roundly frustrating season for the Diamondbacks on the field. They're just 16-28 and 11 ½ games out of first place in the NL West.
'The entire organization is obviously frustrated with the results on the field and we are looking to improve,' Hall said in the press release. 'Tony brings us a wealth of knowledge, experience and success, and will work closely with Kevin and Kirk in evaluating our current state to determine the future of our baseball operations. He is excited and enthusiastic about the challenge, and we are fortunate to have this Hall of Famer on board and a part of the team.'
La Russa, a 2014 Hall of Fame inductee, managed 33 years in the majors, for the White Sox, A's and Cardinals. His teams won three World Series and made the Fall Classic three other times, too. He's third on the career list with 2,728 regular-season wins as a manager. He's been working as a special assistant to commissioner Bud Selig for the past few years.
