Alaric lives! Matt Davis is returning to The Vampire Diaries for Season 6 as a series regular, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

As everyone raced to save the Other Side on Thursday's season finale, a few familiar faces, including Lexi ( Arielle Kebbel) and Alaric, returned. But while Lexi was sucked up into the atmosphere, Alaric was left standing alongside his friends.

First introduced midway through Season 1, Alaric started as a vampire hunter and history teacher at Mystic Falls High, but soon became a surrogate parent to Elena and Jeremy, and a drinking buddy to Damon. (There was also his epic dance moves when Klaus inhabited his body.) During Season 3, Original mama Esther turned Alaric into a crazy Original she could use to kill off her family, but also bound him to Elena. When Elena careened off the bridge and died in the Season 3 finale, so did Alaric. Following his death, Alaric returned twice as a ghost in Season 4 - once when Damon visited his grave and again to, well, drink with Damon - and then in the 100th episode.
