Grace of Monaco: Royal family call movie biopic "a farce"

The Monaco royal family have released an official statement distancing themselves from Olivier Dahan's Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco.

The 150-word denouncement calls the upcoming Nicole Kidman film 'totally fictional' and the trailer 'a farce'.

'On the occasion of the upcoming screening of the film Grace of Monaco at the opening of the Cannes Festival on 14 May 2014 and its release in theaters, the Prince's Palace would like to reiterate that this feature film cannot under any circumstances be classified as a biopic,' begins the message posted on the monarchy's official website.

'The trailer appears to be a farce and confirms the totally fictional nature of this film.

'It reinforces the certainty, left after reading the script, that this production, a page of the Principality's history, is based on erroneous and dubious historical references.'

Criticizing the behavior of Dahan and Harvey Weinstein, the statement made on the behalf of reigning monarch, Albert II (the son of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier) continues:

'The director and producers refused to take into consideration the many observations made by the Palace because these called into question the entire script and the characters of the film.

'The Princely Family does not in any way wish to be associated with this film, which reflects no reality,' it adds, 'and regrets that its history has been misappropriated for purely commercial purposes.'

The US release of Grace of Monaco was recently thrown into doubt by Weinstein, after the producer fell out with Dahan over the film's final cut.

The director previously described Weinstein's edit as 'a pile of s**t', and refused to consent to its release.
