MLB: Boston Red Sox crash to ninth successive defeat

Winning joy: Cole Figueroa of the Tampa Bay Rays (C) is congratulated by teammates after hitting a walk-off RBI double in the ninth

The Boston Red Sox crashed to their ninth successive defeat after a walk-off winner in the 15th inning gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 6-5 victory.

Boston reliever Andrew Miller's poor throw enabled Cole Figueroa to score in the bottom of the 15th as the Rays claimed their third straight win.

AJ Pierzynski had earlier homered as the Red Sox moved 5-0 ahead after the first inning but they were restricted to just two hits thereafter as they continued their worst losing run in over a decade.

Jacoby Ellsbury's homer with two outs in the final inning lifted the New York Yankees to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox had appeared on course for victory following eight scoreless innings from John Danks but relief pitcher Ronald Belisario let it slip in the closing stages.

A double from Danny Valencia and Nori Aoki driving in a run lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 7-4 13th-inning victory over the Los Angeles Angels, whose homers came from Mike Trout and Erick Aybar as they suffered just their fourth defeat in their last 15 matches.

Tigers routed

Five RBIs from Rougned Odor helped Nick Martinez claim his first Major League win as the Texas Rangers routed the Detroit Tigers 12-2.

George Springer returned from a two-game in absence in a blaze of glory, with a pair of his two-run homers inspiring the Houston Astros to a 9-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jeff Baker drove in the runs as the Miami Marlins edged out the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 to claim their third win in four, while Josh Harrison's RBI single in the seventh inning proved to be key as the Pittsburgh Pirates squeezed past the Washington Nationals 3-2.

Brett Lawrie homered as the Toronto Blue Jays claimed a 5-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics, who crashed to their third successive defeat and the Chicago Cubs bounced back from a crushing 11-1 defeat to the San Diego Padres by edging past the same opposition 3-2.

Chase Utley hit a two-run homer as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3, the Cleveland Indians hammered the Baltimore Orioles 9-0 and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing run by edging past the New York Mets 3-2.

Michael Cuddyer and Troy Tulowitzki both thumped homers as the Colorado Rockies claimed a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves, the St Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3, while the San Francisco Giants sealed a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
