Moore a big fan of Hunger Games

Julianne Moore and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman star in Hunger Games: Mockingjay

Julianne Moore has revealed she was a massive fan of the Hunger Games books, and realised playing President Coin was the only way she could be a part of them.

The 53-year-old actress plays domineering District 13 leader President Alma Coin in Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2, the two-part finale of the film franchise based on Suzanne Collins' best-selling books starring Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss.

A first-look picture of Julianne shows her with the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose role as Plutarch Heavensbee will mark his final onscreen appearance. The pair worked together previously on Magnolia, The Big Lebowski, and Boogie Nights.

President Coin is described as being mono-chromatically grey - with uniform, hair, and eyes which appear 'as if almost all the colour has been sucked out of them'. Red-headed beauty Julianne appears with a grey wig and contact lenses.

She revealed in a behind-the-scenes interview: 'I was very impressed with the books, they're political, they're a political tract with adolescent overtones. In a larger scope it really is about what is our political system? Who are we within in it? And that is fascinating to me.

'I read all the books all the way through and I'm like 'I want to be in this movie', and clearly that's the only part that I could play!'

While Coin and Katniss do not trust each other in the book, Julianne also revealed off screen she and Jennifer got on really well.

She said: 'Jennifer Lawrence is a great girl and very funny, and most importantly has a great sense of humour and an ease on set.

'So just the fact she is happy to be there and fun to be with and laughs a lot made it easy for me. Because I wanted to have a lot fun when I'm working and she does too, so the relationship we have as characters is not necessarily the relationship we have as people.'
