Motorola unveils £89 Moto E smartphone with Android 4.4 Kitkat
The Motorola Moto E is unlikely to get those eyeing a Galaxy S5 or Xperia Z2 thinking twice, with the firm instead going after budget smartphone buyers. The handset will be available in the UK for £89 without a contract.
Motorola SVP of software engineering Steve Horowitz said, 'With the Moto X and Moto G, we put Motorola back on the map - we now have over 17 percent of the pre-paid market in the UK. Now we're introducing the Moto E, a great smartphone with a price point for all.'
The Moto E features a 4.3in 960x540 resolution display, slightly larger than the 4in screen on the Moto G, and arrives running Google's Android 4.4 Kitkat mobile operating system.
Typically, this comes skinned in Motorola's custom user interface, although this is a very light skin adding little more on top of Google's Android features. Thanks to this, Motorola boasted that it can 'deliver updates quicker than anybody else in the industry'.
It does add some custom features though, such as a new one called Motorola Alerts. This allows users to let friends and family know when they have arrived at a specific location, for example, or to send a message in an emergency.
While it features newer software, the Moto E won't be quite as powerful as the Moto G, touting a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. It will also come with only 4GB of internal storage that's expandable via microSD card and just one 5MP rear-facing camera. There's a 1,980mAh battery, which Motorola claims will last a full day.
Interestingly, Motorola boasts that the handset comes with waterproofing technology included, making it one of the first affordable smartphones that does, along with an anti-smudge coating on its display. The Moto E comes with support for Motorola's interchangeable back covers too, which will be made available in nine different colours.
Alongside the Moto E, Motorola also unveiled an LTE version of its Moto G smartphone, which the firm said today has been its best-selling smartphone to date. As well as the added 4G connectivity, this comes with a microSD slot too.
The Moto G LTE will go on sale in the UK in the coming weeks, priced at £149 SIM-free. µ
