Phillies' Cliff Lee undergoes MRI on injured elbow
It's 2014, so here's your daily dose of potentially troubling pitching elbow news. This from Ryan Lawrence of the Philadelphia Daily News regarding the Phillies' Cliff Lee:
Cliff Lee stayed behind in Philadelphia on Tuesday to have an MRI on an ailing left elbow. Results of the MRI won't be known until later tonight at the earliest.
'Any time one of our starters has to get a MRI,' general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said, 'it's alarming.'
Lee remains in play for his scheduled start on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. And any talk of surgery would, for now, be very premature.
GM Ruben Amaro told reports that Lee has been dealing with elbow discomfort for 'about three weeks.' Lee hasn't had any significant elbow problems in his career, at least until now.
The 35-year-old Lee this season has pitched to a 3.18 ERA and a sparkling 6.78 K/BB ratio after 10 starts. The former AL Cy Young winner long ago established himself as one of the top command pitchers in the game today. He's presently seven wins shy of number 150 for his career, and he's logged at least 200 innings in each of the past six seasons.
Lee is presently in the fourth year of a five-year, $120-million contract. The deal also includes a vesting option for 2016.
