An Xbox Live Gold subscription may no longer be a requirement for using the video game console's selection of streaming media apps.

According to Ars Technica, which cites 'multiple sources,' Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners can soon use apps such as Netflix and Hulu without a Gold subscription.

The Xbox Live Gold subscription costs $60 a year, and includes access to other features such as multiplayer gaming.

Since launching the Xbox One last year, Microsoft has positioned the device as an all-in-one entertainment hub, feature high-end video games as well as a large selection of entertainment apps. The console also includes a feature tied to the Kinect sensor wheres users can control their TV and cable box through voice commands.

Microsoft will launch its own original programming starting in June, which includes two series based on the first-person shooter franchise Halo.
