'Godzilla' revamp crushes box office
CREATED 11:51 AM
The latest revamp of the 1954 Japanese thriller 'Godzilla' was expected to debut at around $70 million in box office sales, however, it obliterated theaters instead with a whopping $93.2 million. This is the biggest opening weekend for the deadly 60-year-old monster originally directed by Ishiro Honda.
'It's the biggest opening ever for a 'monster movie,'' reports The Wrap. 'It blew away the $72 million debut of 'Jurassic Park: The Lost World' in 1997, which tops the list of 'creature features' at Box Office Mojo.'
'Director Gareth Edwards' 'Godzilla' played more strongly than expected across the board, connecting with young fans drawn by the spectacle and older moviegoers for whom the rampaging reptile may have struck a nostalgic chord,' further reports The Wrap. 'Sixty percent of the audience was over 25 years old, and males made up 58 percent of the crowd.'
'Godzilla' cost $160 million in co-production featuring 3D effects under Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.
The top 2014 movie is currently 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' with $95 million, however, Monday's final box office sales may change that, placing 'Godzilla' in first place overall.
