The Nasdaq advanced on Thursday thanks to a rally in biotech shares, Reuters reported, including the stock of Boston-based Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. So-called momentum names in the Internet and biotech spaces have recently echoed the broader market's direction, while moving in an outsized fashion and often without specific news. Among momentum names, Vertex shot up 6 percent. The Nasdaq biotechnology index gained 1.9 percent.
