AMD Disrupts GPU Market Again With $399 Radeon R9 290
AMD recently released its disruptive new flagship GPU, the Radeon R9 290X, into enthusiast waters. The high-end graphics processor forced Nvidia 's hand, resulting in an aggressive $150 price drop for their GTX 780. With tomorrow's release of the Radeon R9 290 (that's minus the 'X'), AMD is hoping to send another ripple into the competitive landscape - especially at its price point of $399.
Press review materials for the R9 290 pitted the graphics card against Nvidia's GTX 770, but an 11 th hour beta driver update - possibly the reason for the card's delay - would position the R9 290's closer to the $499 GTX 780 in terms of performance, according to AMD.
Actually AMD told a lie. In my testing the R9 290 outperforms the GTX 780 every step of the way: Synthetic benchmarks like FireStrike and Heaven, in both 1080p and 1440p resolutions, and even with Nvidia-optimized titles like Batman: Arkham City and Metro: Last Light.
But let's not forget that Nvidia's 780 Ti is just around the corner, and I'll be able to divulge more information about that card, its benchmarks, and pricing on November 7.
For now, I wanted to leave you with some initial benchmarks of AMD's R9 290. A more detailed examination is in the works, but for now it would appear that AMD is set to disrupt the GPU market once again. For the time being, it also has that $399 price point all to itself.
