The Fallout – Where Do Nexus 5 Users Go from Here after Android 4.4 KitKat?

The Nexus 5 is now approaching its first month from its near-simultaneous launch and release, and as we all know, it was the first Android device to ship with the new platform, Android 4.4 KitKat. Though some of its specifications pale in comparison to flagship phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the HTC One, it is nonetheless quite notable as the fifth-generation pure Google flagship phone, and a device that sells at a very competitive unlocked price. Now that we're almost a month removed from the Nexus 5's debut, where do its users go from here vis-à-vis Android 4.4 KitKat?

So far, everything has been very quiet as far as Android 4.4 bugs are concerned. There are a few that have been reported, but compared to previous Nexus handsets, the Nexus 5 has been relatively trouble-free, and not as buggy as some of its predecessors in its first month in stores. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't expect any bugs to crop up in the immediate future. It's not uncommon for a device to develop certain issues over time, but for now, the Nexus 5 seems to be quite stable for the most part. With that in mind, users can expect a few software updates to roll out while waiting for Google's next Android version upgrade; this could mean a few bug fixes or the usual stability updates that usually roll out in between new versions of Android.

As for the major software update, or simply a version upgrade, Google should be rolling at least one new version of Android in 2014. The Nexus 5, being a Google-branded device, should be among the first to receive this upgrade, but right now it's quite hard to predict when that will be rolling out. And there's no telling either how many major updates Google will be rolling out in 2014. That said, it may be best to wait till the spring months, or right before the next I/O expo, for more accurate rumors and speculation regarding Google's follow-up to Android 4.4 KitKat.
