Candidate Ausmus moves on from Cubs to Tigers

The Chicago Cubs' managerial search has dragged on long enough for one candidate to accept a job elsewhere.

That would be Brad Ausmus, who, according to multiple reports, will accept a job with the Detroit Tigers. Ausmus interviewed with the Cubs on Friday, but the Tigers apparently felt so strong about Ausmus' qualifications despite never managing for a major league organization that they decided to offer him the position.

The Cubs have spoken to a plethora of candidates. That doesn't include Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo, whom they're expected to ask formal permission to interview. Padres bench coach Rick Renteria still looms as one of the top candidates.

But the Cubs, who have sent two sets of officials to talk to him in Southern California, haven't offered him the job. And Renteria is recovering from hip surgery that has prevented him from traveling.

Padres assistant general manager A.J. Hinch and Rays bench coach Davey Martinez still lurk as candidates.

Despite no major league experience, Lovullo has worked under Cubs President Theo Epstein in 2010 in the Red Sox's organization when he managed Triple-A Pawtucket and is very familiar with Epstein's operations.

With an impressive interview, he could be a favorite although Renteria has done nothing to hurt his chances and was groomed to be a manager in the Marlins' system 12 years ago under current Tigers general manager David Dombrowski until a change in ownership.
