HGST starts shipping its first helium
In a Monday announcement, Western Digital subsidiary HGST revealed that it is shipping the world's highest capacity 3.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) --- the 6TB Ultrastar He6. The drive, which is now available, has a five-year warranty.
According to the information shared by HGST, the new Ultrastar He6 drive is a hermetically sealed, helium-filled HDD. Rather than having the platters spinning inside an air-filled enclosure, the platters of the Ultrastar He6 drive rotate inside an enclosure that is filled with helium gas.
Since helium gas is 14 per cent of the density of air, the level of friction is much lower. As such, the Ultrastar He6 drives require comparatively less power to push their platters around; and the turbulence within the enclosure is also quite less.
As such, the enclosure of the 3.5-inch Ultrastar He6 drive - the spin speed of which has not yet been disclosed by HGST - can accommodate the placement of up to seven platters instead of the standard five.
With regard to the implicit advantages of the new Ultrastar He6 drive, HGST's product marketing VP Brendan Collins said corporate and cloud data centers are under increasing pressure to improve storage efficiencies and cut costs; and added: 'HGST is at the forefront delivering a revolutionary new solution that significantly improves data center TCO on virtually every level - capacity, power, cooling and storage density - all in the same 3.5-inch form factor.'
